This extension is awful but there is no alternative.
I really like the fact that I have a number for people I dont want to give my cell phone number too.
The extension has bugs with the latest version of Google Chrome on Mavericks (OS X 10.9). It leaves empty pop-up windows, sometimes hides the entire Chrome window, and seems generally quite flaky.

The Number of Messages waiting in the icon is not working (mine is stuck on 341). I've tried clearing the data and reinstalling. I also don't receive audio notifications of new texts. It's basically only good for being able to quickly write a quick text from the browser, or as a link to the web application. I don't understand how a multibillion dollar company can't keep their chrome extensions in working order... This is still broken as of Nov 5th 2018...

i don't see much used on it unless Google allows me to actually make phone calls, also changing my number or transferring my phone to Google number is stupid, i feel like Google may have a market if they actually make this service better.
