Overview

Product summary

Review the store description, core capabilities, and common use cases.

High Contrast lets you browse the web with your choice of several high-contrast color filters designed to make it easier to read text.

When you install this extension, all pages are "inverted", so black becomes white and white becomes black. Press the "browser action" icon in the toolbar to toggle it on and off, or customize your settings on a per-site basis. Use a convenient keyboard shortcut to quickly change your settings while your browse.

Other extensions try to change the default colors, but this ends up breaking many popular websites. Only this extension applies filters to your page that invert almost everything - the only exception is photos, which are left alone.

Also note that the Chrome web store and other built-in pages like the New Tab page and Settings pages are unaffected - extensions like this one are not allowed to modify them, by design.

The problem with this extension is that it doesn't work in many cases. These cases are mostly Google Docs and sometimes GMail (try opening a big doc!). It's ironic given this extension is published by Google to run on a Google browser but it breaks on using Google web apps. What's even more ironic is that I am myself a Googler.

I hope this is not the release of the extension, because the image is also converted, I think it is unacceptable for Google, make a normal dark mode as in YouTube and I will be very happy !! : D PLS!!! I WANT TO NORMAL DARK MODE IN CHROME!! or may be rename for example: "help blind people" or "high contrast for the visually impaired" it is not for big audiences.. I hope to do something :D "10q" (thank you)

Thank god for this thing it saved my eyeballs from being fried. It even flips white to black in videos. Amazing.

НЕ всегда держит контраст - при переходе на новый сайт или вкладку - контраст исчезает

It works, but is finicky on some sites. As one reviewer noted, Ctrl+F can correct this, specifically Ctrl+F5 on Windows 7. F5 bypasses the website's cache and refreshes the page from the site's server. Youtube videos get a white haze in the center of the video when High Contrast is activated. This may be one explanation why some uploaded youtube videos have a similar white haze that cannot be removed. They were uploaded when the uploader's High Contrast extension was on. Still, a useful extension for clarifying text.

So good but so disappointing. First of all, it doesnt work in every window. In fact lots of wndows. sometimes it works in a window then it stops working, often if you make the text larger -mouse scroll wheel + Ctrl. It would also be much more useful if you could adjust the contrast rather than having preset options. So close yet so far. Would ebe nice if the developer took note and made changes, then it would be brilliant!

The performance impact is sensible, but acceptable I suppose. However, when configuring a particular site to "Normal", I believe that there is still a performance impact on Chromium (71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) Arch Linux (64-bit)), e.g. when scrolling (an SVG filter is still being applied, defined as #hc_extension_off, rather than disabling everything, it looks like). Also, in greyscale, the gamma exponent of 3 is particularly aggressive: it makes the text very bold, to the point of being blurry and some images (images set as CSS background are processed) are sometimes hard to decipher. In inverted grayscale, the problem is even worse, as white-on-black text (pre-transform) can become too low contrast to read once inverted and transformed. It would be nice to have the ability to adjust gamma easily, maybe with a slider. And maybe a lower gamma exponent should be used by default for inverted grayscale.

When the extension is enabled, even with default mode set to "Normal", the video on twitch.tv turns to gray for as long as the extension is on. There is no way to disable it on a per website basis either, it's globally on or off. A good idea, but the implementation is lacking.
