Lately it doesn't seem to update the number of new emails I have unless I open/refresh my gmail inbox in a tab, at which point why would I even need a separate indicator on my screen? Not sure what changed. It used to work very well, refreshing nearly immediately when new emails arrived.

Just go and install 'Checker Plus for Gmail' over this or any other gmail checker, it's the best I've seen, even the ones made by Google.
Not an alternative to the Gmail Notifier as it has none of the functionality. No audio alert and slow to refresh.
I cannot seen any improvements/progress between the PC installed program "Google Notifier" (made over 2 years ago) and this. Basically both does the same thing except one needs Chrome to be open. The thing this feature has been lacking at the start is support for multiple Gmail accounts at once (and I have many).
Se actualiza sólo cuando entras en gmail... por lo tanto es inútil. (Al menos Windows 7) Es una pena que vayan a eliminar el notificador de escritorio de gmail. Funcionaba a la perfección.
