CAD is a file format which is made by AutoDesk.
Autodesk became best known for AutoCAD, but now develops a broad range of software for design, engineering, and entertainment—and a line of software for consumers, including Sketchbook.
CAD files allow companies to visualise the project/construction in 3D before building begins to ensure there are no issues with the design. Most 3D softwares support the CAD file format as it is used universally by most companies.
3D software is mainly used by architecture and electrical companies, as the engineers inside these companies work with 3D drawing on a daily basis. Having this software allows engineers to be portable as they can bring their designs around without having to carry paper copies. It also makes catching errors of the 3D plans to be a lot easier vs paper designs.

Many negative comments on not even being able to see files and whatnot. I just went through 20 files real quick to verify the file matched the title to move on to prepare cut files and ensure I didn't forget any parts. SUPER quick for opening it up and seeing what part the file is. No complaints here! Not sure if I am using it to its full designed intent or if others are trying to use it beyond its designed intent. But it works great for me for what I need. Maybe its been fixed since the bad reviews? I dunno.
