Product summary

Review the store description, core capabilities, and common use cases.

At DuckDuckGo, we believe the best way to protect your personal information from hackers, scammers, and privacy-invasive companies is to stop it from being collected at all. That's why millions of people choose DuckDuckGo over other browser extensions to protect their searching and browsing. Our built-in search engine is like Google but never tracks your searches. And our browsing protections, such as ad tracker blocking and cookie blocking, help stop other companies from collecting your data. Oh, and our browser extension is free — we make money from privacy-respecting search ads, not by exploiting your data. Take back control of your personal information with the browser extension designed for data protection.

FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS

Protect Your Searches by Default: Install the extension and we’ll set your default search engine and homepage to DuckDuckGo Search, so you can easily search online without being tracked.

Shield Your Browsing History: Our 3rd-Party Tracker Loading Protection blocks most trackers before they load, greatly exceeding what the browser offers by default.

Secure Your Email (Optional): Use Email Protection to block most email trackers and hide your existing email address with @duck.com addresses.

Automatically Enforce Encryption: Shield your data from network and Wi-Fi snoopers by forcing many sites to use an HTTPS connection.

I'm very impressed with this extension and would have installed it much sooner had I known about it. Realistically, you're just not going to remain totally anonymous while still enjoying most mainstream services; it's always some level of tradeoff. However, you can take some basic steps that greatly improve your privacy without even presenting much of a hassle, let alone cutting yourself off. This extension strikes a very good balance between enhancing your privacy and staying out of the way. For instance, it will warn you that you can't watch YouTube anonymously, but you can still click through and it will offer to whitelist the service. I like the fact that it gives me a privacy report for the sites that I visit and also transparently 'upgrades' their privacy when possible, by blocking trackers and such. I haven't seen any loss of functionality from this yet. I find DuckDuckGo search to be adequate most of the time, and when it isn't, I can still just navigate to Google as a fallback.

I would have gave this extension 5 stars if it enables users to see number of search results, even if it was approximate, because I use this a lot to put different phrases in quotation and see which is more used than the other. Also, a side note: there are too much porn results. I usually turn strict mode off because I don't like to be restricted, but when it's off, almost anything I search give back porn results and they're usually fake. For example, if I looked: "animal behavior", I will find porn videos called "animal behavior". In another word, websites copy the search terms I use to name their result accordingly whether it really exists or not. I hope this could be fixed. Final suggestion: it would be great to allow users to choose which search engine they would like to use its results. For example, bing and yahoo through DuckDuckGo or Google through DuckDuckGo. A potential error: Although I choose Google maps as my primary map viewer, it doesn't look or function like google's at all. It would also be beneficial to chose between showing Google's reviews or yelp. Additionally, it would be useful to select a very specific region so that I can have better search results. For example, if I live in Dallas, and I wanted to find a store, it will give priority for things that are in Dallas without the necessity of writing Dallas in the search. I also noticed that sometimes DuckDuckGo doesn't suggest correction for misspelled word, and it doesn't do that at all when I am searching in images. And speaking of images, the image results are usually very limited despite the popularity of the term I search for; it would also be better to have the images page separate from the web searching so that I won't scroll up each time I scroll down in pictures and click view more to view more pictures. Thank you.

O fi el bun ca și protecție, dar îngreunează destul de mult încărcarea site-urilor...

I really believe this is useful, but DuckDuckGo forcing their own search website is not acceptable. I would continue to use this app if they added a feature to stop the forced use of the DuckDuckGo search function. Other than that, it is a great tool for web security and stopping tracking. TL;DR: Uninstalled because I was forced to use the (inferior) DuckDuckGo search over Google.

Is it right that I cant change y default search engine with DDG? I would like to prevent trackers but still use Google for search, it is unavoidably better than DDG search.

I really gave this a chance, used it for a couple of months. But unfortunately whenever I had to search for anything than implied some background to the search, like local hospitals, local stores, local maps, it wasn't enough. It works just as well as google for information searches when it comes to "strict" searches like "how to overclock a gtx 1070". But when it comes to "loose" searches like "gtx 1070 service" it mostly fails. This doesn't mean it's bad, or that it can even improve it. We just have to accept that privacy comes with a price, and that price is convenience. Bottom line, it's become too frequent that I search on DDG for something, but then have to refine the search, or worse, have to resort back to google to get what I'm used to getting. I will surely give this a try again later in time. Edit: some things it actually does better than google, like previewing search results without going on to the actual page. Not sure if this is just a deliberate integration with Stack Overflow, but I like it.
