I'm now being prompted to sign up for a $97 a month subscription when I try to log into the "free" extension, which always has problems. The extension used to be great until the company changed hands.

I think there was some confusion on the extension being "free". You need to have a paid subscription to Smartscout in order to utilize the free extension.
